Original era manufacture. An unusual, and seldom encountered model 1887 Prussian enlisted helmet, an attempt to lighten and simplify (making them less expensive) the enlisted helmet of the era.Black leather body with a rolled edge to the front visor instead of the more commonly seen brass reinforcement. A simplified black leather chinstrap with a unique mounting system to the side of the helmet. Previous models utilized segmented brass chinstraps, which were held in place by a large screw bolt which passed through a brass boss. The 1887 model is unique in that a single brass segment, with a brazed loop is used on each end of the adjustable strap. This brazed loop slips over a vertical brass tongue which in turn is attached to a brass oval plate, which is held in place by a steel screw bolt from the inside of the helmet. Single, small size Prussian cockade which is correct for this era. The liner is in poor condition, dry and flaking, with missing portions of the adjusting and again in a spirit of economy, the liner leather is made from very thin leather stock. The helmet itself is very sound, visors are tight and there are no extra holes behind the wappen. From our own collection.
