Original era manufacture. I believe by the style of the leather liner this helmet dates to around 1880-1900,with similar examplesbeing identified asworn by officials in Alsace-Lorraine. Leather bodied helmet with no extra holes behind the ornate eagle wappen. Flat scale brass chinstrap with a single Reichs color cockade on the right side (wearers side) of the helmet, correct as this was an Imperial, rather than an individual kingdom or duchy helmet. Mellow aged patina to the gilded brass fittings, visor stitching is sound with no issues. Only a single comment to make and that is regarding the spike base. The spike itself is removable, revealing a near new finish on the inside of the base. At the time of our purchase the base was set with the double ventilator's set front to rear, instead of the proper side to side configuration. This could have been done by the original wearer, as air flow is increased this way, or, the spike was twisted around on its stem by a previous owner for some reason. We removed the spike from the helmet (an easy job as it is held in place with four screw nuts) and placed it in its proper position. The little cut-out which loops over the rear spine however is now onthe right side instead of properly placed on the rear. You are thinking perhaps this is much ado about nothing, however you'll notice it when you handle the helmet, I just didn't want to risk twisting that spike stem back into place and perhaps snapping it off. A very sound 120 year old helmet with a nice patina.
