Original era manufacture. A Franco-Prussian War pattern helmet worn by the Heavy Cavalry of the Kingdom of Saxony. Introduced in 1867, and worn until 1876 when a lobstertail helmet was introduced.Heavy leather helmet with lots of brass trim with a very large curved comb, crowned with a green lambs wool top. Front and rear visors are securely attached to the helmet body, the liner is fairly intact, missing the ends of several fingers, period unit markings painted onto the inside of the rear visor. The brass chinstrap has been rebuilt, of the correct pattern, with some segments replaced in my opinion, and backed with a thin black leather. On the left side of the helmet is a Saxon pattern kokard of a smaller pattern more for a pickelhaube instead of this pattern helmet. The green lambs wool top shows evidence of being trimmed back to keep the appearance even, perhaps due to old moth damage. There are two replacement screws inside the crown to help hold the comb in place. The helmet displays very well, is quite solid, and is very impressive looking. We purchased this at a good price, and can offer it at half of what we paid for our example in 2007.
