Original era manufacture. A French inspired Heavy Cavalry sabre that we here in the USA would refer to as our M1840 "wrist-breaker".This example was made by the German firm of Schnitzler-Kirschbaum, and displays their initials on the reverse ricasso. On the blade spine can be seen the Prussian acceptance markings of a Crown, FW 47, and a cypher proof. The polished steel blade measures 36 inches in length, with a smooth finish, no corrosion issues, sharp point, and only a few tiny nicks in the cutting edge. The blade has a steel patina finish, with light mottling and staining from age, but again, no corrosion pitting.Standard three branch guard with a German cypher proof on the flat side, original leather wrapped grip, bound with a single strand of twisted brass wire. The heavy steel scabbard is relatively dent-free, presenting an even steel patina finish with no corrosion issues. A very clean old sword overall. Please note, a fellow collector commented that this sword may also have been an import to the USA in time for the War with Mexico in 1847-48.
