Original era manufacture. This great old sword was manufactured at theRoyal Prussian Arsenal at Potsdam (spelt Potzdam on the blade), with a straight, double edged blade measuring 31.5 inches in length. On each side of the ricasso is a gilded Prussian eagle, with the name Potzdam also highlightedin gold.Gilded brass cupped guard, with a T cross behind it, single branch knuckle guard which is secured to the pommel by a large brass screw. The grip is tightly bound with heavy brass links of a chevron design.Simpleblack leather bodied scabbard with gilded brass fittings. Thereare two repaired breaks in the leather, one just below the scabbard throat fitting, and another about 8 inches further down. They areintelligently done using thin black leather to cover the break instead of the ubiquitous electrical tape repair. This sword may date prior to my designation as I have seen similar guards in reference books dating to 1750. My designation was taken from our copy of Paul Pietsch's book;"Formations und Uniformierungsgeschichte des Pruessischen Heeres 1808-1914", pages 128-129.
