Original era manufacture. A tall pattern helmet, similar to the 1867 model but with the addition of a brass rear spine. Correct pattern Prussian eagle wappen with the small brass web between the top of the eagle's legs and bottoms of the wings. One of the screw posts has come loose, the nut and washer are present, but need to be soldered. Circular base for the spike, with only two ventilator holes present, again a correct feature for this early style helmet. The chinscales are from a later, wartime (WWI) pattern officers helmet, they are of zinc and at one time had a gilt wash, now gray patina finish. At the time of our purchase, the spike base brads were missing and it was being held in place by some brass paper brads, we placed three original brads from our spare parts, and the steel reinforcing plate to keep it together. The rear visor is loose on the sides and will need to berestitched, the leather lining is missing. A good basis for a restoration project.
