Original period manufacture. White piped feldgrau strap with red chain stitched numbers. This regiment initially served with the 39th Division until 1915, when transferred to the 115th Division. On the 27th of September 1918, the second day of the opening of the Meuse-Argonne offensive, the 171st regiment entered the line with the 115th division near Gesnes and engaged American units during the back and forth fighting for the town. It suffered heavily during the fighting, was removed briefly for a rest, re-entered the line opposite AEF units and stayed in the line until the Armistice. Several American Divisions opposed the 115th, including the 2nd Division and 33rd Illinois National Guard. Good research potential.
