German WWI Era, Trench Mortar Insignia

Original period manufacture. Quite honestly, I do not have any idea what this is. That it is German, or perhaps Austrian, is certain (ges.gesch marked reverse), and the trench mortar is certainly of Central Powers origin. What we have is a zinc disc covered in a royal blue wool felt material, with a stamped insignia at center. Measures 35 mm in width.
