Original era manufacture. Magnetic center, FR (Friedlander) marked Iron Cross 1st Class, in it's original case of issue with the rare cardboard storage box. The cross has an even dark patina finish on the frame and edge ribbing, the case has a purple velvet pad, with a white silk lining, showing a slightly gold color EK outline on the top of the lid. The lid is warped on the sides and no longer will lock in place. Of course the rarest segment of the trio is the original cardboard carton with period label (only to be opened by the recipient) and seal. This set is identical in every respect to an EK in our own collection. Ours was purchased about 10 years ago, at the West Coast Militaria Show, held at the LA County Fairgrounds. Previously, our EK with case and carton, was a key element in an extensive medal and document grouping belonging to a WWI German aviator. I had been aware of this particular grouping since the early 1980's, when its then current owner would have it on display at the old Great Western Show in Pomona California. It was never for sale as I recall, only for display, again becoming available to the market once the collector passed away. I make mention of our EK here as it is an easy thing to slip any EK1 and its case inside the carton; a mix or match is easily done.
