Original era manufacture. German WWI M 1916 steel helmet with clear maker and size markings stamped into the skirt, ET66. Postwar applied camouflage paint finish, with a very artistically lettered front, "From Verdun Battlefield". My take on this helmet is that it was was picked up sometime in the 1920's or 30's, and then painted, and lettered. The finish shows a true age patina, with toning to the paint and scratches with rust patina beneath. The helmet steel still has a nice ring to it, not something that has rusted away to nothing. Cool helmet, perhaps picked up back in the day by one of the former combatants during a visit to the battlefields of Verdun.
