Original period postcard. Sepia-tone image by Urbans Hofphoto Kiel. Otto Weddigen commanded the German submarine U-9, gaining fame in the early months of WWI when he sank in succession the British cruisers, Aboukir, Cressy and Hogue on 22 September 1914. He was awarded both the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class for this feat. After the sinking of anotherBritish cruiser,HMS Hawke in October 1914, he was awarded the Pour le Merite.Given command of a new class of submarine, the U-29, he lost his life when his sub was rammed and sunk by HMS Dreadnaught in 1915, the U-29 went down with all hands.
