Original era photography. Commercially produced, sepia image of Otto Weddigen, commander of U-9, and later U-29. He is most famous for the sinking of three British Cruisers, HMS Aboukir, Cressy & Hogue on the 22nd of September 1914. He and his crew were greeted as heroes upon their return to port, with all of them awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class, and the officers, the 1st Class as well. Transferred to the new sub U-29, he commanded her until it's destruction by ramming by HMS Dreadnought on the 18th of March 1915, there were no survivors of the German crew. He is shown here seated, wearing his newly awarded Iron Cross 1st & 2nd class. He was further honored by the awarding of the Prussian Pour le Merite, after the sinking of HMS Hawke in October 1914.
