Original period manufacture. 5.5 inch cast bronze U-Boot, made from metal taken from the Imperial Navy Submarine U-88 prior to her sinking during firing practice off of the coast of San Pedro California in 1921. According to online sources, around 4000 of these little subs were made to be presented as souvenirs to guests attending the retirement party of a senior US Navy Officer, Commander Chauncey Shackford in 1921. The opinion of the men who have rediscovered the wreck of U-88, and have done an excellent job telling its history, isthat the tiny souvenir subs were made from the torpedo doors from the interior of the sub. U-88 was an active duty ship with the Imperial German navy during WWI and was credited with the sinking of 14 allied ships. A great little souvenir of the era.
