Original period manufacture. An officers quality, private purchase tunic with original sewn insignia throughout. Small size, perhaps a size 34. No moth issues to report with the tunic presenting an age-toned appearanceto the once bright aluminum tresse and litzen. There is some scattered light staining to the body of the tunic and a small cut in the right side about where a ribbon bar would go. The marksman lanyard was on the tunic at the time of our purchase and looks as if it has been there since 1945 as it matchesthe tunic quite well in condition, it is included in the price. The 118th regiment was comprised mainly of Bavarians and formed part of the 36th Division in 1935-36. The 36th Division began the war on the Western Front and did well during the French Campaign of 1940 and was converted to a Panzer-Grenadier Divisionin November of that year. In 1941 it served on the Eastern Frontduring the Leningrad Offensive and suffered heavy casualties during the winter of 1941-42. Transferred to Army Group Center it fought in the battle of Kursk in 1943 and in the Summer of 1944 it was smashed in the Russian Offensive. Rebuilt as a Volksgrenadier Division and sent to France in September of 1944 to oppose Patton's advance. It surrendered in southern Germany in May of 1945. Overall this is a sound, unaltered German Army tunic from a unit with a solid WWII history.
