Original era manufacture. Private purchase quality, doeskin wool infantry officers hat, complete with proper chinstrap and metal insignia. Pale yellow silk lining, displaying light soiling from wear, missing the sweat shield. Securely sewn brown leather sweatband with the owners initials, R.S., stamped into surface. On the underside of the sweatband, can be found a unit ink stamp in two places, showing it to be the property of the 9th Company, IR 55. Possibly indicating an upgrade by an NCO to officer status by the addition of the silver chin cord. No moth issues to speak of regarding the wool portions of the hat, only a few spots of crazing to the surface, no holes visible in the top or band. The hat is not crushed or flattened and really displays quite nicely. During WWII, IR 55, a Bavarian regiment, served with the 17th Infantry Division, seeing combat in France in 1940, and the remainder of the war on the Eastern Front, surrendering in Czechoslovakia in 1945.
