Original era manufacture. Kriegsmarine issue plated steel teaspoon, measuring 5.75 inches in length. Maker marked on the reverse of the handle.Accompanying the spoon at the time of our purchase, is a small sheet of paper indicating that the source of the spoon was a gift from one Douglas Boyer, from the U-505 in 1976.Douglas Boyer was a longtime resident of Honolulu (the source of our acquisition of the spoon) who operated a Military Collectors shop there for many years. I met Doug at the old Great Western Show in Pomona, I always stopped there to purchase a copy of the After The Battle magazine. The U-505 was a German submarine captured intact by the US Navy on the high seas in June of 1944.At the end of WWII the U-505 was brought back to the USA, and now resides in the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Prior to her museum arrival in Chicago, the U-505 saw many previous visitors; in the early years by US Navy personnel who removed small souvenirs from the boat. Over the years we have had several relics removed from U-505; purchased directly from the hands of the sailors who retrieved them.Likely the most amusing item was an enameled metal instruction sign giving directions how to operate the underwater toilet.
