Original era manufacture. Recently we purchased a number of items from the family of Sergeant Duane C. Hinkle, US Army, who served in the 735th Ordnance Company during WWII. According to his daughter and son-in-law, Sergeant Hinkle spoke of gathering up firearms and other weaponry, piled in the streets of a recently captured German town. These items were brought home from that pile after WWII.Very clean, 28 inch chromed steel blade with no issues, clear makers logo by Weyersberg, with a Luftwaffe proof above. Aluminum guard and pommel with nice gilding remaining on the swastika. The leather covering on the grip is basically sound, with some wear visible just below the bottom of the pommel. Very sound double aluminum wire binding. The scabbard is dent-free, also with aluminum fittings and the leather carrier is in position. Of interest here, and in my opinion period done, in that the scabbard body is covered in a Luftwaffe blue paint instead of leather.I believe the explanation for this oddity, is that being a company property sword, issued on an as-needed basis, the leather covering somehow became damaged, and the Luftwaffe simply removed the damaged covering, and painted the body of the scabbard in Luftwaffe blue paint, an easy and effective repair. I can't imagine Sergeant Hinkle taking the time to effect this repair, and have paint mixed to have this done.
