Original era manufacture. German WWII M1940 steel helmet, maker Q64, lot number 478, aluminum liner band with rectangular chinstrap loops, and all three rivets with slot washers. The liner leather is supple, appears to have been oiled at some time in the past, the adjusting string is present, one of the fingers is torn. The exterior of the helmet displays a rather rough texture feldgrau paint finish, which matches the finish on the rivet heads. Traces of what would be Waffen-SS decals remain, with a lighter shade of paint beneath where the decals would have been when intact. The interior finish of the helmet is much more smooth, very dark, of an indeterminate color. No traces of any other decals can be seen, however with the fact that many otherwise honest, decal-less, German helmets have been "altered" over the past 70 years in order to heighten their value, we will price this one as if the decals do not exist.
