Original era manufacture. Standard Wehrmacht issue steel helmet, maker and size marked Q64 (Quist), on the side of the neckskirt, the lot number is not visible. The exterior and interior of the helmet is covered in a hand brushed, thick battleship gray paint finish, splotches of which appear on the rolled edge of the leather liner. On the inside of the neckskirt small patches of a navy blue underpaint can be seen beneath the gray. The liner has never been removed from the helmet and is in poor condition, yet all of the fingers remain, although some have curled under from moisture, the rivets with slot washers covered in corrosion are intact. The long section of the chinstrap is intact, and fairly pliable, with gray paint appearing on the portion looping through the rectangular chinstrap bale. The short section also remains intact, also with gray paint on the surfaces nearest to the helmet body, but missing its securing buckle. Overall the helmet exhibits a finish caused by long exposure to moisture and salt water, with heavy corrosion inside the crown and along the edges. This is a helmet that we all would love to know the history of, the classic "if it only could talk" artifact.
