Original period manufacture. During this year's Spring Cleaning project here at Stewart's, this interesting hat was found lurking in a box. Purchased well over five years ago, it has sat patiently waiting for its turn on our site. Well, that day has arrived. A basic description follows, black wool topped visor with a black velvet band and red wool piping throughout. There is a crossed nickel-silver mining emblem on the crown and a red-silver-black cockade on the band. Silver military style chinstrap secured with silver pebbled side buttons. Pale yellow silk lining with an intact sweatshield displaying the makers name of (I think) Carl Wagner of Koln. The leather sweatband shows age and damage with an old glue repair at front. There is some light scattered mothing to the body of the hat, mostly in the piping. There is glue residue behind the crossed hammers, but overall the hat is pretty solid. The only reference we have in our library that mentions this, or similar mining hats, is Tom Shutt's book, Dress and Field Service Hats of the Third Reich. He describes a very similar hat but with different insignia and chinstrap. So, you've got a bit of a project but with a good base to build on.
