Original era manufacture. Transitional issue dagger with plated fittings and a maker mark of Henkels and RZM M7/10 1938 on the ricasso. Good crossgrain polish to the blade surface, witha nice contrast to the motto. The reverse of the blade displays some scattered spotting and staining from age, no evidence of over-cleaning, or corrosion pitting.Sound original wood grip without cracks or chips, zinc eagle set into the grip with an enameled SA emblem above. Plated upper and lower guards with bubbling to the surface of the metal. Original black paint finish to the scabbard body, of which about 90% remains, dent to the scabbard reverse, about midway down. Plated fittings no dentingto the ball tip. All scabbard fitting screws are present. During the 1970's, Police departments across the land struggled to get a handle on the crime of stolen property. One of the ideas that came from this struggle was Operation Identification, where owners could engrave their Social Security or Drivers License on their property, to enable Law Enforcement to easily return it should it ever be stolen.Well, here we have a prime example of that practice illustrated with this nice old NSKK dagger. The number L4455566 is lightly engraved on the scabbard throat, and on the blade below the motto. Part of its story now, but it brings to mind the old proverb "The road to hell is paved with good intentions".
