Original period manufacture. Launched in 1935 and commissioned in April 1939, lead ship of her class. She had a successful career as a surface raider, until damaged in the Battle of the Barents Sea in December 1942.She returned to Germany for repairs which were never completed, she was scuttled at her moorings in 1945. Her bell is on display at the Laboe Naval Memorial.
