Original era manufacture. Issue quality hat of ribbed feldgrau wool with black wool piping and dark green wool cap band. Orange cotton lining with a partially intact sweat diamond with a size mark 37 1/2 beneath. Tightly sewn leather sweatband which is dated 1937 and unit marked 3/PI.Batt.28 (3rd Company, Pioneer Battalion Nr.28). There are a few pencil-point moth bites in the top of the hat but nothing severe, it has kept its shape well over the years and displays nicely. The 26th Pioneer Battalion formed part of the 28th Jager Division and saw combat during the invasion of Poland in 1939 and France in 1940. It was converted into a Jager Division while stationed in France in early 1942, assigned to the southern sector of the Russian Front it took part in the final assault on Sevastopol in the Crimea. It ended the war in a pocket formed near the old Russian Fort of Brest-Litovsk.
