Original era manufacture. This item was brought home from WWII byPFC R.D. Reynolds, who served with the 11th Armored Division in Europe.The 11th Armored Division (Thunderbolt)landed in France in December 1944, and was rushed east to contend with the German offensive in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge.In early 1945they crossed the Rhine at Oppenheim, continued through southern Germany, and ended the war on the outskirts of Linz Austria where the tanks of the 11thAD met up with the advancing Red Army.During the European operations, the 11th Armored suffered the loss of 2, 877 casualties, killed, wounded and missing. Black and white image of the steamship Cap Arcona. Unused reverse, slightly curled from storage, comes with an acid-free plastic slipcover. The Cap Arcona was used in the closing days of WWII to transport prisoners from the Neuengamme KZ Lager, under SS guard. The ship was not carrying Red Cross flags, nor she marked with Red Cross symbols. Attacked by the RAF whose pilots were unaware of the prisoners locked below decks, only 350 of the 5,000 concentration camp inmates survived.
