Item #61506 : Original period manufacture. Matched pair of US Navy issue identity tags, named to Robert Gus Patefield, 622-43-10, Tetanus Inoculation date of 5/44. Ancestry shows him serving aboard the USS San Diego as a Gunners Mate 2nd Class, from 31 March 1942, until 25 August 1944, then aboard the USS St. Paul from 17 February 1945 to 1 October 1945. During his time aboard the USS San Diego, the ship served during the Guadalcanal campaign, witnessing the sinking of the USS Wasp and Hornet, participated in the invasions of New Georgia, Bougainville, Tawara, Majuro, Kwajalein and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Later, aboard the Cruiser USS Saint Paul the bombardment of the Japanese Home Islands, including the last salvo fired by a major warship during WWII.
