Item #68402 : Original period manufacture. Intricate, riveted link chain mail Hauberk from the Indo-Persian area. Difficult to pin it down to a precise year, but online, many similar suits seem to date from the 15th through 18th Centuries. However, mail shirts or suits like these were also worn into the late 19th century, as many British contemporary accounts attest to their wear during the Sudan Campaigns of the 1880's-90's. Noting that Emirs and knights wore similar suits along with the Khulah Khud spike helmet. The suit measures 32 inches from hem to collar, made of alternating links of closed and riveted steel circles, the finish is an overall red-rust patina. You will note that the rear skirt is cut high above the waist, allowing the wearer to ride a horse comfortably, while the front skirt provides protection to the upper leg area. On the front of the suit are two hammered steel panels which measure 6x9 inches, each mounted with a steel rosette, pierced with a decorative arrow, which serve as mounting points for the cloth or leather cords which closed the suit while worn. A previous owner installed modern wire to do the job of the missing cording. Each of these large panels are flanked by a smaller, plain steel panel of 2x8 inches. On the back of the suit is an area measuring roughly 13x18 inches, consisting of five vertical runs of 40, 1x2 inch, overlapping steel plates, these allow the wearer to move more easily while wearing the suit. Some of the plates are missing as shown, with a few newer links applied to hold plates in place. The display form is included in the price, but can be left out if you so desire.
