Item #69787 : Original period manufacture. White wool piped feldgrau strap with red chain-stitched numerals, 419. Mothing on the edges of the piping. During WWI it served primarily on the Eastern Front, brought West in 1918, and assigned to the 77th Reserve Infantry Division. It suffered heavy losses during the American barrage on the opening of the St. Mihiel Offensive, September 12 1918. German prisoners stated they were completely cut-off during the American barrage. A.E.F. unit histories report contact with the 77th Reserve Infantry Division; Big Red One 1st Infantry, Indian Head 2nd Infantry, Red Diamond 5th Infantry (this division notes the 77th and particularly IR 419 on the early hours of 9/12/1918), Rainbow 42nd Division, Middle West 89th Division (notes particularly IR 419 on August 10th and again on September 12th 1918).
