Original era manufacture. This is an interesting sword, of a pattern I could not find described in the book, Swords of Imperial Japan 1868-1945" by Jim Dawson. Polished steel blade measuring 28 inches in length, even steel patina overall. Brass hilt and guard, with a Russo-Japanese War style full length, single branch guard. The brass backstrap is marked with two crossed flags, and a compass point on the pommel, and similar points on each side of the grip. Sorry, but no idea what organization they represent. Fishskin grip with single strand wire binding. The best feature is a two color Japanese sword knot wrapped around the guard. An interesting sword to be sure.
