Original era manufacture. Introduced in 1899 and produced in two blade lengths, Ko with a 32 3/4 inch blade, and Otsu, with a 30 1/2 inch blade. The model Ko was issued to enlisted Cavalry personnel, and the shorter Otsu issued to other enlisted personnel requiring a sword sidearm. I believe this particular example is quite early production, as a four digit serial number 1100, is stamped into the blade ricasso. Interestingly it was later struck out, no other markings can be seen on the guard or scabbard. The blade is very clean, with arsenal edge sharpening and just the hint of a bend about 3/4's down its length. Standard steel guard with a dark steel patina finish, checkered wood grip with no cracks or chips. Steel scabbard with a dark steel patina finish and corrosion pitting near its drag.
