Original period manufacture. A typical late war example featuring a very nice blue steel finished blade made without fullers, straight guard, square type pommel and slightly contoured wooden grips. The blade is quite clean for one of these, factory edge, with no surface corrosion.Clear markings on the ricasso. Original finish wooden grips, secured with two steel rivets instead of screws, light wear and use to the surface. The wooden scabbard body is very carefully and tightly bound with thin cloth cord, from the base of the steel scabbard throat to midway through the steel chape. My personal opinion is that this might of been Japanese done, perhaps as a protective cover for the wood beneath. However I have seen binding similar to this on US Navy Mk1 utility knives as well. Regardless, it remains a very interesting WWII Japanese bayonet.
