Original era manufacture. A clean example of a sword sometimes incorrectly referred to as a Navy Landing Force officers sword. In the excellent collector reference "Swords of Imperial Japan 1868-1945, Cyclopedia Edition" by Jim Dawson,it is presented as a model ofwhich little is officially known, with Western collectors referring to them asLate War swords, while Japanese collectors refer to them as Type 3. On page 174, Plate 14-1, a photograph of the Japanese surrender to the US Marine 3rd Amphibious Corps in Tientsin, November 1945 appears.TheJapanese sword on the extreme right of the table in the photo is a similar example as ours listed here.Clean, 27 inch polished steel blade with a fairly clean temper line on each side. There are tiny flaws in the steel testifying to the lateness of manufacture. Simple pierced iron tsuba, typical brown cloth grip binding with a white canvas insert. Black colored pommel cap with a brass reinforced hole for the sword knot loop. The brown finished scabbard has arough, sandpaper-like finish, and is without a lower scabbard fitting. Frankly, due to the other late features seen on this sword, it many have never had one as no evidence of one once being there can be seen.
