Original era manufacture. Rubberized canvas scabbard with attached frog, and a later war manufacture, Nagoya proofed bayonet.Straight guard, rounded bird-head pommel, contoured wooden grips and a bright finished blade made with fullers. Original wooden grips show wear and use, with the word SAIPAN written in ink on one side. Basically sound rubberized canvas scabbard with integral frog, stitching and rivets are present, with typical breaks in the fabric of the belt loops. The surface has bubbled from heat exposure, yet remains pliable enough that the blade can be easily drawn and inserted.
