Original era manufacture. A recent estate purchased bayonet brought home from WWII by ARMC2 Roy Biby, who served as a rear-seat gunner, on a US Navy SB2C (Esbey-Deucey) Dive Bomber, aboard the USS Chenango during WWII. Roy was a frequent customer in our store back in the day, as he was a life-long collector of Civil War material. He was a lot of fun to have him stop by, always enjoyed hearing his stories. Standard pattern type 30 bayonet made by Toyada Automatic Loom Works. Hooked guard, bird-head pommel and contoured wood grips. The blade was finished bright, but has substantial staining and light surface corrosion to its surface. Dark steel patina with light surface corrosion on the guard and pommel, matching patina to the dent free scabbard, with some light pitting visible. The bayonet comes with remnants of its original leather frog. The USS Chenango was an escort carrier, which operated for a time off of the coast of Guadalcanal in the spring of 1943. Aviation units from the Chenango visited Henderson Field frequently. Roy served aboard the Chenango until being assigned to the USS Antares in September of 1944.
