Original era manufacture. A very clean example of the pre-WWI Prussian enlisted helmet, unit marked to the 28th regiment (Infanterie Regiment von Goeben, 2nd Rheinisches) and named to Gefr. Mellor, I Company. Brass furniture throughout, with no extra holes behind the wappen. The helmet plate while original, is a replacement in my opinion as the patina does not match the remainder of the helmet. However it has been in place for a long time as there is a nice old dust build-up behind the plate. Original Prussian & National cocardes with wear to the paint as shown. A nice old replacement chinstrap of black leather, with what may be original brass fittings. The visors are securely sewn to the body of the helmet, and the leather has a very nice uncleaned luster to the finish. The helmet is named in several spots to Gefreiter Mellow, but I suspect the one on the underside of the front visor, as it looks a bit fresh; perhaps done by a previous collector owner for some reason. All in all, a very attractive looking helmet. A final comment, most of these old helmets have been through a number of hands over the past 100 years or so, often being assembled, or disassembled as the case may be. In this instance I feel the spike and base plate have never been removed from the helmet, as the rivet prongs are smooth and flush against the black painted metal disc on the interior of the helmet. Further, there is no evidence of scratching to the painted surface of the disc, which would indicate an attempt by someone to the remove the spike by prying up the rivet prongs. A nice old helmet, in solid shape.
