Item #69759 : Original period manufacture. A very clean example of the 1860 enlisted Cavalry saber by the most prolific manufacturer of the era. The polished steel blade measures nearly 35 inches in length, original polish throughout, with one or two minuscule nail catchers in the cutting edge. No corrosion issues at all, one of the nicest blades we have offered with very clear (normally difficult to see)made by Ames Mfg. Co.Chicopee Mass.on the reverse ricasso, and U.S. J.C.W. 1865 on the obverse. At the base of the blade is the original leather bumper, pleasing yellow brass patina finish to the three branch guard. On the pommel the inspector initials of J.F. can be seen. The original leather wrapping is very sound, seamed at the top, with twisted brass wire binding. The sword is tight, no evidence of the tang being modified, smooth to the touch and even to the brass pommel cap. Bright polished steel scabbard, no evidence of over cleaning, just some slight surface discoloration and, to be expected, a few spots of light surface denting along its length. The drag exhibits minimal wear and displays a period rack number, 61. Original 1885 pattern sword hanger was on the sword at the time of our purchase. The straps are pliable and exhibit typical dryness. The reverse of the brass hanger is RIA marked with an interesting stamped Signal Corps emblem with the letters NY and number 21 below. New York had several mounted Signal Corps companies in the 1880's & 90's, you can see an example of the 3rd Company dress coat in our archives section.
