US Civil War M1860 Cavalry Sabre, Mansfield & Lamb, 1864, Original Sword Knot, 1885 Sword Hanger
Item #69761 : Original period manufacture. Standard 1860 model cavalry sabre of the American Civil War 1861-65. This example was made by the Rhode Island firm of Mansfield & Lamb, one of a contract for over 8,000 that year, at a cost of $6.75 each for Uncle Sam. The polished steel blade measures 35 inches in length, runs straight and true with a few scattered nail catchers in the cutting edge. The blade is very clean, exhibiting most of the original surface polish remaining. Original leather bumper at the base of the blade, original leather wrapped grip bound with single strand twisted brass wire. Light scuffing to the grip surface, no areas of visible wood. Clear markings on both sides of the ricasso, US 1864 date and inspectors initials of J.C.W.. Pleasing yellow brass patina to the three branch guard, the outer most branch being slightly bent from handling or service use. Inspectors initials on the pommel C.E.W.. Attached to the guard is an original black leather sword knot, while stiffened a bit from age, it retains most of the knot fringe, and is overall fairly pliable. Brightish polished steel scabbard with a fairly sizable surface dent on the reverse side between the suspension rings. The original 1885 pattern sword hanger was on the sword at the time of our purchase, remaining pliable with typical surface dryness to the straps.
