Item #68573 : Original period manufacture. A very clean example of a pattern introduced during the Civil War, which saw Army use up to 1902 when the current pattern of sword was adopted. The polished steel, diamond shaped blade measures 29 inches in length, with etched designs on each side of military motifs, U.S., and American eagle. The blade runs straight and true, no corrosion issues with the retailer's name on the ricasso. Ornate cast brass guard and pommel, with one side of the guard folding down for wear. Shagreen wrapped grip, bound with single strand twisted brass wire. Dent free blue steel scabbard with brass trim and carrying rings. All in all a very handsome example of this sword. Of note, the retailer was Chas. (Charles) Svendson of Cincinnati Ohio. A Danish immigrant who ran a fraternal, military regalia store from the late 1860's until his death in 1903. His son, of the same name, became a noted artist.
