US Pre WWI Experimental Pattern Cavalry Saber 1905
Item #48920 : Original era manufacture. An honest example of the experimental saber introduced for trials by the US Army in 1905. The polished steel blade measures 30 inches in length, with ASCO (Ames Sword Company) Ordnance Bomb, 1906 stamped into the ricasso. The blade surface is bright and clean, just a touch of corrosion on the spine; running fairly straight and true with a very slight bend near the point.Pressed steel guard with a dark patina finish, with evidence of old cleaned surface corrosion. Fishskin wrapped grip, which is bound with triple strand wire. Some of the strands are missing portions of their length, with wear showing to the surface of the grip, this leads me to believe that this sword saw field service during the trial period. Proper scabbard, with a leather covered body and steel throat, two suspension rings, mounted close together. The leather covering displays scuffing to its surface, however the stitching is sound, with wear to the leather over the suspension loop bands.
