Item #69733 : Original period manufacture. Sheet brass match safe with a painted brass Iron Cross on one side. Scratched into the reverse is Sgt. First Class/ J.A. Weslander/ Colombey-les-Belles France. John Arthur Weslander 1887-1972, served with the Headquarters Detachment, 7th Infantry Division in France. He was born in, and he died in, Minnesota. During the years of his life the Battle of Wounded Knee was fought, and he lived long enough to see a man land on the moon. The 7th Division was one of the last divisions of the A.E.F. to arrive and see combat in France. Two days in active sectors, 31 days in quiet sectors. The death machine of WWI still claimed near 400 killed and near 1400 wounded in those 33 days of combat from the Hourglass Division.
