German WWII Heer Issue Winter (Ubermantel) Surcoat & Attached Hood, Pioneer Shoulder Straps
Item #69012 : Original period manufacture. Late war quality feldgrau wool surcoat, double breasted with a slash chest pocket on each side and a flapped hip pocket below. The overcoat is lined completely with a gray cotton/wool mix, with imitation silk sleeve lining. Half belt in the back, with a French cuff at the end of each sleeve. Large shawl type collar, with a thin gray wool hood attached to the interior of the collar. On each shoulder is a removable enlisted wartime quality shoulder strap, piped in Pioneer black, of imitation silk material. These were on the coat at the time of our purchase. Overall the coat exhibits considerable age and service wear, no real moth issues, just a snag or two here and there, with wear to the nap. It's missing a couple of buttons, and others have been replaced, still, a scarce example of a limited issue, wartime coat, with a great "been there" look to it. Of note, most of the original paper buttons remain intact. These heavy coats were intended for exposed vehicle drivers and crew personnel and as a guard coat for guards and sentries. See Volume 1, page 133, Uniforms and Traditions of the German Army 1933-1945, Angolia & Schlicht.
