US WWI Veteran, New Jersey Essex Troop Dress Coat, Medals & Busby
Item #69461 : Original period manufacture. Dark blue wool thigh length coat with yellow trim and brass eagle buttons. Worn by an NCO veteran of New Jersey's Essex Troop, likely dating to the 1920's. The coat exhibits traits of the old style cavalry dress coat but with more modern embellishments such as two piece eagle buttons and DI emblems on the collar. On the sleeves are Sergeant chevrons and five individual service chevrons, the left sleeve displays three smaller, gold wire chevrons for 18 months overseas service during WWI. On the left chest is a suspension device now carrying an unnumbered Mexican Border Service Medal, with space for a missing WWI Victory Medal. Below is a marksmanship bar with clasps for Cavalry, Sword and Pistol. A frayed yellow is draped across the shoulders. Period tailor tags in the collar and chest area of the black quilted cloth lining. There is some scattered mothing on the body of the coat, but nothing really severe. Fraying to the black cloth collar lining. The busby body is of lambs wool with a cavalry yellow twisted wool cord and bag. It is incomplete as it is at the moment, missing the decorative enameled badge worn on the front. The yellow cords are present as is the brass chinstrap, Essex Troop side buttons with its removable pompom. Black cloth lining with a leather sweatband which has loosened pretty much all round, still attached on one side. Coat is about a size 36 regular.
