Original era manufacture. Introduced in 1890, through the efforts of 1st Lieutenant Edward Casey of the 22nd US Infantry. Casey at that time commanded a company of North Cheyenne mounted scouts stationed at Fort Keogh Montana. This pattern helmet, is the only US dress helmet of the era to feature multiple colors in its plume and cording; with the ends of the plume extending 6-8 inches below the edge of the helmet. We purchased this helmet from the estate of well known, early headgear collector Mr. Norm Hobson, who passed away in the early 1970's. While inspecting the helmet we found Mr Hobson's original inventory tag inside the sweatband which included a notation of price, $500. On the underside of the sweatband are two contractor inkstamps.  The helmet is complete with all proper insignia and fittings. None of the wool cords or horsehair plume fluoresce  under a UV light, with no fraying or damage to the cords or waffles. The only comment is that the original cavalry pattern helmet plate has a small hole in the center of the shield, a telltale indicator of another bit of insignia being mounted there at some point, perhaps a regimental number or company letter. Most of the Indian Scout helmets available on today's market are likely assembled from original parts which were available from firms such as Bannerman's or W.Stokes Kirk. This particular example has been in the same family's hands for the past 40 years, and in our collection for the last six years. Overall it is in excellent condition, with no issues beyond light age and wear.
