Original era photography. A very clear image of a young Merchant Navy officer, by the name of H.C. Boyle, who had his picture taken in San Francisco in 1884. Sent to his sweetheart, with a touching note on the reverse, " with the ....best wishes to the dearest girl under God's heavens today, H.C.Boyle, October 15 1884". The detail of his cap insignia is quite clear, so that should be able to be identified. Good research project.
