Original era manufacture. Standard 1855 pattern US Socket Bayonet for the .58 caliber Springfield rifle. Bright finished blade, with scattered staining to the surface, yet the finish has a nice luster to it. The locking ring operates as it should, and this one fits our Springfield rifle easily. Perhaps with an application of elbow grease some of the staining can be made to go away.1861 pattern scabbard and frog, details of which are discussed on pages 158-159, in the book American Socket Bayonets and Scabbards by Robert M. Reilly. This example has a bridle leather scabbard body with a buff leather frog. There is a cut in the frog leather as shown. Overall the scabbard is quite sound for its age and fits the bayonet nicely.
