Original era photography. A beautifully colorized image of an NCO serving in the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry, famously known as Duryee's Zouaves. Raised in the early days of the war it saw considerable combat service, suffering the single greatest loss of any Federal infantry regiment in any battle during the entire Civil War. During the Battle of 2nd Bull Run, while attempting to support Hazlett's battery D, 5th US Artillery against the onslaught of Longstreet's Texas Brigade, the 5th New York suffered the loss of 322 of the 525 men engaged; the entire color guard was killed, save for one man, only one officer survived the battle. The battery withdrew to safety, and their colors were not lost, they were carried off the field by the survivors of the regiment. This hand colored image is set in a period oval frame with plaster of paris decoration and a gold paint finish. Oval mat with the image measuring 5.25 x 7 inches showing excellent detail. There is some damage to the plaster decoration on the frame, however the image is outstanding. This has hung on the wall in our home for many years, now it is time for someone else to enjoy it.
