Original era manufacture. A very sound example of a Federal, Civil War era cap pouch with a Newark N.J. makers mark on the inner cover. The sheepskin insert is intact, as is the near new condition vent pick. The body of the box is not crushed or broken, with no flaking to the leather. The outside leather flap shows wear and age to the surface, with a lead-filled, early, small-style box plate attached to the flap. The plate is likely a postwar addition, perhaps a state militia unit, or a Bannerman modification, done to "jazz up" the rather mundane cap boxes he had in store by the thousands. A cool old thing in anyone's money.
