Original era Photography. A very clear image of Lewis Shortz (1840-1900) , who served in Company K, 142nd Pennsylvania Infantry. Mustering into the regiment in August 1862 as a Private, transferring into the Veteran Reserve Corps in February 1864.During the battle of Gettysburg, the 142nd Pennsylvania formed part of the First Brigade, Third Division, 1st Corps, under the command of General John Reynolds. The 142nd suffered the loss of nearly two thirds of the 336 men brought into the field, killed, wounded, or prisoners.Quite probably Lewis Shortz was among the wounded or captured, when transffering into the Veteran Reserve Corps, after his parole or hospital release.Elmira New York backmark
