Original era manufacture. Brown wool covered, tinned steelbodied Civil War canteen, with a soldered pewter spout, and cork stopper (no chain). Slipped through the three metal strap loops, is an adjustablebrown leather shoulder strap which is broken in one spot. When the two halves of the canteen body were stamped out, an impressed design of a thin, five-pointed star, was part of the die. This design is quite apparent when examining the canteen in hand. Several examples of this pattern canteen can be seen on page 131 of Sylvia & O'donnel's book, "Civil War Canteens". Two of the examples illustrated have notations as to possible Confederate use and manufacture. Our canteen comes with a Heritage Auction lot tagand copieddescription from the John Henry Kurtz collection around 2008 I believe. A penned notation states that the canteen is a St.Louis canteen with tin spout, star design and original cover. The body is quite sound, with a few small dents, and minimal moth damage, an interesting variant in either case.
