Original era manufacture. German manufacture and imported by both the Union and Confederate governments for service during the Civil War 1861-1865. Based on a French design, swords of this type were used by many nations during the 19th century. This example shows a very clear makers mark of a bow and arrow with the letters B M which stands for J.E.Bleckmann 1808-1975. The blade is fairly straight, shows a an attractive gray steel patina with some light nicks in the cutting edge from service and backyard sword fights. Very dark brass patina to the guard which rattles a little bit. About 50% of the leather grip wrapping remains with traces of the twisted brass wire binding. The heavy steel scabbard shows a very dark patina, no dent issues and the blade draws easily. This old sword has not been cleaned or messed with in a very, very long time. It looks like it is right out of the attic.
