Original period manufacture. See page 53, figure 39 in the book "The American Bayonet 1776-1964" by Hardin for a complete description of this unusual Civil War era bayonet. 21 inches overall length with an 18 inch blade, with the initials J.D.G. stamped into the base of the blade. Dark steel patina finishbut no corrosion damage. The government granted a contractfor 900 examples of this early breech loading rifle in March of 1863, it is believed alarger number were manufactured for Militia contracts. The original leather scabbard is intact, showing surface flaking but most of the finish remaining.
